Criminal Investigations

The Radford City Police Department Criminal Investigations is a specialized unit trained to investigate serious crime. The unit consists of the Lieutenant, Sergeant, 3 investigators and a narcotics officer. The Investigations unit has interview rooms, specialized audio / visual processing and it houses 1 of 2 full service laboratories in southwest Virginia.
The lab allows detectives on-site processing and handling of criminal evidence.

The Criminal Investigations Bureau is under the direction of Lieutenant P.J. Rutzinski and includes Criminal Investigations, School Resource Officers, Narcotics Investigations and Traffic Crash Reconstruction. He has served the department as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Patrol Supervisor, and Lieutenant of Administration.

Specialty Equipment
The unit also has a specially equipped Mobile Crime Scene van. This unit responds to major crime scenes that involve the preservation of physical evidence. All detectives are trained in the operation of the unit as well as evidence collection.

Certifications
Detectives have various certifications in specialized trainings as well as ongoing trainings required for investigations. Cases investigated by the unit include but are not limited to burglaries, theft, forgery, credit card theft, sexual assaults and auto thefts.
